Stanley the Pomeranian came to us in July of 2021. He was so tiny that he almost fit into my hand. Cute and soft, our little puppy was already quite fluffy, with pointy tufts coming out of his ears and a little mane like a Husky. As Stanley grew, the ends of his long mane became dark, while the rest of his fur was a lighter tan color. Eventually, he developed a few dark streaks throughout his fluff.
After awhile, our tiny dog started to look a lot bigger. It was difficult to tell how big he had actually grown. Was it all just fluffy fur? His doggy sweaters could barely fit and we had to get a size small harness, rather than extra small. Then one day, Stanley had gone for a walk after the snow started to melt and he was covered in slush.
He needed to have a bath. We put him in the bathtub with his best friend, Alfie, our other Pomeranian who is six years older and used to taking baths. We discovered two things. First, Stanley did NOT like baths. Secondly, he was a LOT smaller than he looked. Once his fluff got wet, he was still just a little guy.
Eventually, we couldn’t keep up with grooming Stanley and his fur started to get matted in some areas. We soon noticed that our trusty little companion also did NOT like being brushed and combed. So off to the spa he went. Stanley’s first haircut was pretty simple. We just had them give him a trim. He looked a lot better, but it wasn’t long before the mats came behind his ears again!
With his second summer approaching, I decided to get Stanley a full haircut. I dropped off my shaggy-looking pal, hugging him tight as his thick fur tickled my cheek.
